What is ALEKS PPL?
ALEKS PPL (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces for Preparation, Placement, and Learning) is an adaptive assessment and learning tool designed for high school students (grades 10–12) to support fully self-directed learning in mathematics.
By completing the ALEKS PPL knowledge assessment, the system—powered by artificial intelligence—analyzes your responses to determine which math topics you have already mastered and which ones need further improvement. Based on this analysis, ALEKS PPL customizes the learning content to fit your needs. Additionally, previously studied topics are periodically revisited to reinforce knowledge and help achieve the highest possible learning outcomes in mathematics.
After spending a certain amount of time in a learning module, you can retake the knowledge assessment to track your progress and measure your improvement.
The learning process consists of three parts
Initial knowledge assessment
A test consisting of approximately 30 questions, typically taking 60–90 minutes to complete, which determines which math topics have been mastered and which ones need to be learned in the upcoming learning process.
Individual learning module
A personalized learning content tailored for self-directed learning, with tasks, examples, and explanations provided if you encounter difficulty with any of the exercises.
Repeated knowledge assessment
After spending a certain amount of time in a learning module, you will have access to a repeated knowledge assessment test, which can be taken up to five times to improve your results. The learning license for the ALEKS PPL platform is valid for one year.

How long is the ALEKS PPL license valid?
The ALEKS PPL license is valid for 12 months, during which you will have access to the initial knowledge assessment test, the ALEKS PPL learning module, and the ability to retake the knowledge assessment test up to five times.
- What are the main mathematics topics I will be able to learn?
In ALEKS PPL, you can study Algebra I (rational functions, algebraic fractions, rational equations and inequalities, exponents with rational exponents, geometric sequences, exponential functions) and Algebra II (sequences and exponential functions, rational functions, and algebraic transformations). Additionally, you can learn Analytic Geometry I (equation of a line), Geometry I (rotational solids, combinations of three-dimensional shapes), and Geometry II (planimetry, stereometry). These topics align with the mathematics education curriculum in Latvia.
What is the question format in the test?
The test does not provide answer choices. You will need to provide a specific answer. You are allowed to use paper and pencil while solving the problems.
Can I use a calculator?
For calculations in certain tasks, a virtual calculator will be provided. Otherwise, you should not use a calculator.
Can I use other resources during the test?
You are only allowed to use writing tools and paper. It is not recommended to seek help from friends, family, online resources, or textbooks. Using outside help will lead to an inaccurate assessment of your knowledge level and will not support the improvement of your skills.
Can I review a question after I have already answered it?
ALEKS PPL is an adaptive system, so once you submit an answer, it cannot be changed. Therefore, be sure to carefully review your answer before submitting it!
What should I do if I don't know the answer to a question?
It is likely that you will be asked questions about topics you haven’t mastered yet. For these questions, feel free to answer “I don’t know.” This will help ALEKS PPL understand what you do and do not know, allowing it to better adjust the learning content to help you improve your math skills.
However, for any other topics you are familiar with, it’s important to show your best performance.
Is there a time limit for the test?
Yes, the test may have a maximum time limit. Usually, the test can be completed in about 30–60 minutes. If for any reason you need to pause the test, you can log in again and continue from where you left off.
Instruction for using the learning module
When you open the learning module, you will have the opportunity to review a brief instruction on how to use the virtual calculator, create graphs, and enter different types of answers. If at any point during the learning module or knowledge assessment test you are unsure how to enter an answer, use the “Help” button.
Start with the initial knowledge assessment
Begin with the initial knowledge assessment before accessing the learning module! This assessment will be used to create personalized learning content for each course participant.
Spend time in the learning module
After the initial knowledge assessment, you will have the opportunity to practice and improve your knowledge in the learning module.
Repeated knowledge test
The test can be retaken up to five times. There must be a break between tests – a specific amount of time required by the learning process. Additionally, there is a set amount of time you must spend in the learning module before you can take the test again.
